You can start this route of 45 kms right at our hotel. It takes you from Leiden to Wassenaar, where you travel through the forests of the De Horsten estate. Along Duindigt (known for ancient horse races) you cycle north of The Hague through the dunes. You cycle to Katwijk and from there back to Leiden. Of course, it's possible to cycle the route counterclockwise.
You will see a lot of the city of Leiden on this 32 km route. You will also cycle around the Kagerplassen, a recreational area just north of the city.
Leiden is known as the Key City - referring to the city coat of arms with a white shield and two crossed red keys, Leiden is referred to. The history of the city dates back to at least the year 860, when it was still a dike village, built at the foot of an artificial hill.
This route takes you along the Roman Limes, where the city of Leiden once originated.
